10/19: Gum Printing Workshop

Time: 2 hour workshop

A one-of-a-kind workshop studying and applying the process of Gum Printing to make your own prints. Gum Pigment (aka, “Gum Bichromate”) Printing is a historical alternative photographic printing process that was popular with the Pictorialist movement of the early 20 th Century for its unique painterly qualities. It can create images with absolute archival permanence and exquisite beauty in any colors that are desired. Modern digital imaging has reinvigorated interest in alternative photo techniques with more people gum printing today than ever before. Light snacks and beverages will be provided!

In this workshop, we will:

  • learn the foundations of gum printing including: a short history of its discovery and use

  • explanation of how it works, overview of the required materials and tools

  • demonstration of the steps in making a print

  • helpful tips for how to get the best results and go further in exploring the process

  • make your own 4”x5” gum prints.

  • The following supplies are included:

  • 5.5”x7” sheets of top-quality French cotton rag paper

  • pre-mixed pigmented gum

  • sensitizing chemical

  • suitable negatives for printing

  • protective gloves and brushes


  • open to all levels

You will go home with:

  • with at least one or more beautiful prints suitable for framing, as well as a printed handout of the instructions and info
